[edit] Under G.А. Zherebtsov’s guidance and direct participation
- The unique Russian high-potential incoherent-scatter radar with high information capabilities for exploring the Earth’s upper atmosphere was created. Research results obtained with this instrument are highly important for understanding the nature of physical processes in the upper ionosphere, their relation to geophysical processes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, etc.
- A new research field concerning investigations into the nature of global climate changes was formed at the Institute. The mechanism of the effect of heliospace and anthropogenic factors on the Earth climate system was examined. The solar variability effect was shown to be of great importance for the Earth’s thermal balance.
- A new line of research - Earth remote sensing - was organized. It allows important applied environmental-control tasks to be solved. Up-to-date techniques for forest fire detection have been developed and are now used by the branch RF ministry.
- Over the last 5 years, new digital ionosondes have come into operation, station of the Earth’s magnetic field measurements has been modernized and included into the international “Intermagnet” network, and construction of the AZT33-IK infrared telescope has been completed.
- Important results of the investigation into the polar ionosphere dynamical regime and structure, as well as of the experimental research into radio wave propagation at high latitudes were obtained. Basic research results related to the magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions allowed solution of the problem of the environmental effect (near-Earth space) on spacecraft operation.
