Observatories

The Baikal Astrophysical Observatory (BAO)

The Baikal Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) is located in the outskirts of the settlement of Listvyanka on the south shore of Lake Baikal, 70 km far from Irkutsk.

BAO is noted for its remarkable astroclimatic regime due to an antihunt action of big water area and local anticyclon upon air environment. General Purposes: Observations of a thin structure of active solar formations;

The Sayan Solar Observatory

The observatory is located in the mountains at 2000m altitude.

This is due to the specific character of the observatory's main objectives which require very good seeing for polarization observations and solar corona observations.

Main objectives: Measurements of solar magnetic fields;

The Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (SSRT)

The SSRT is a special-purpose solar radio telescope designed for studying solar activity in the microwave range (5.7 GHz) where the processes occuring in the solar corona are accessible to observation over the entire solar disk. The SSRT sensitivity is such that it is possible to observe active regions at all stages of their development, at the background of the emission of an undisturbed solar atmosphere. Signal accumulation in the radio telescope's full reception band is used to obtain radio images of faint features in the solar atmosphere. Fast varying emission of flares is recorded at additive linear interferometers comprising the SSRT. More..

Integrated Magnetic-Ionospheric Observatory

General Purposes:

An origin and diagnostics of geoeffective formations in a solar wind; Modelling of magnetosphere's indignations; Electromagnetic waves in the magnetosphere.

Norilsk Integrated Magnetic-Ionospheric Station

Data base of Norilsk Neutron Monitor Database contents of Norilsk neutron monitor data starting from 1971 (18NM64): up from January 1971-1981 and from 2000.

The interval of accumulation: hourly from 1971; 1-minute since August 2000.

Geophysical Observatory

Is located in Tory, 150 km away from Irkutsk. The major task is monitoring structure and dynamics of the upper and middle atmosphere by passive radiophysical and optical methods. More..

Atmosphere Radio Diagnostics Observatory

Observatory is located in the Irkutsk region, 125 km away from Irkutsk. The Irkutsk Radar of Incoherent Scatter (IRIS) that was created on the base of the radar installation “Dnepr” received within the conversion programme of the Soviet Armed Forces. The IISR has a whole set of process equipment, buildings and communication systems and represents a complicated technical complex. Modernization of the system of control, registration and signal processing permits efficient usage of the radar for research into the upper atmosphere with the incoherent scatter technique. Transmitting complex of the LFM ionosonde of the ionosphere vertical, oblique and oblique back scatter sounding within the frequency range of 1-30 MHz. This complex is the main component of the ISTP SB RAS multiposition LFM ionosonde with remote transmitters in Magadan and Norilsk and a receiver in Tory (the Buryat republic). More..

Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics was founded in 1960 on the basis of the Siberia's oldest geomagnetic observatory formed in 1886. Today it's a big scientific institute. Director - D. The Institute of the Earth’s Crust of the Siberian Branch RAS, in cooperation with the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch RAS, Siberian Branch RAS and Mongolia Research Center for Astronomy and Geophysics will hold the XIV Russian-Mongolian International Conference on Astronomy and Geophysics in Irkutsk on September 15–20, 2023.

The Russian-British Seminar of Young Scientists "Dynamical plasma processes in the heliosphere: from the Sun to the Earth" will be held by the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS on 18-21 September. The seminar is aimed at initiating new international and interdisciplinary projects on solar and space physics and geophysics. The venue of the seminar is the I.I. Molchanov-Sibirsky Irkutsk State Universal Scientific Library (253 Lermontov st., Irkutsk).
