Atmosphere Radio Diagnostics Observatory
From ISTP SB RAS
Observatory is located in the Irkutsk region, 125 km away from Irkutsk.
Coordinates: longitude 103° E, latitude 53° N. Altitude above sea level is 400 m.
- The Irkutsk Radar of Incoherent Scatter (IRIS) that was created on the base of the radar installation “Dnepr” received within the conversion programme of the Soviet Armed Forces. The IISR has a whole set of process equipment, buildings and communication systems and represents a complicated technical complex. Modernization of the system of control, registration and signal processing permits efficient usage of the radar for research into the upper atmosphere with the incoherent scatter technique. The radar horn antenna (246m × 12.2 m aperture size) has frequency beam scanning. The IISR frequency range is 154–162 МHz, radiation power is 3.2 МV, pulse duration is 10–820 ms, pulse repetition frequency is 24.4 Hz, and sector of scanning is 60° in the north–south direction. The Irkutsk Incoherent Scatter Radar was put on the list of Russia’s unique facilities by the RF Ministry of science and technology (Reg. No. 01-28).
- Transmitting complex of the LFM ionosonde of the ionosphere vertical, oblique and oblique back scatter sounding within the frequency range of 1-30 MHz. This complex is the main component of the ISTP SB RAS multiposition LFM ionosonde with remote transmitters in Magadan and Norilsk and a receiver in Tory (the Buryat republic).
