• In 1974, he graduated from the Irkutsk State University (ISU), physics speciality, and started working at the Scientific Research Institute of Applied Physics of the Irkutsk State University
• In 1976, he started working at ISTP
• From 1977 to 1979, he was in the military service
• In 1979–1987, he worked at the Applied-Research Laboratory of the Leningrad Research-and-Production Association “Vector” organized at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) for solving applied problems
• Since 1987, he has been working at ISTP; he worked his way up from Research Associate to a Deputy Director for science.
• He defended Ph.D. thesis in 1990
• In 2003, followed thesis for a doctor’s degree
• In 2006, D.Sc. (Phys.&Math.) Potekhin was elected as a Corresponding Member of RAS
• Currently he is a scientific adviser of studies on radiolocation investigations into the upper atmosphere and on methods for monitoring near-Earth space; he also controls executive departments of the Institute
