The Alfven resonance theory in the axially symmetric (two-dimensionally irregular) magnetosphere was first developed in ISTP.
Incident magnetoacoustic wave partially penetrates into the magnetosphere from the solar wind. While propagating through the magnetosphere, magnetic sound reaches magnetic shell, where its frequency coincides with that of Alfven oscillations of geomagnetic field lines. Resonant build-up of the Alfven wave occurs here with its amplitude more than that of the exciting magnetosonic wave. Alfven waves reach the Earth surface along geomagnetic field lines, where they are registered as geomagnetic pulsations. |
